what is the way to add a task to a story?

Alam August 6, 2020

Hi,

Can anyone help me with the steps/details how to add a task underneath a story?

I know how to link a task to a story but my question is about how to create a task under a story.

Hi @Alam

The standard hierarchy for Jira is Epic > Story > Sub-Task

------------

If you're looking to create a Sub-Task, on an issue's view page:

  • New View: Press the "Create subtask" button just under the issue's summary
  • Classic View: Press options (3-dots icon in top-right) and select "Create sub-task"

You'll also need to ensure sub-tasks are enabled and included as an Issue Type (Classic Projects) - or just created in each project (Next-Gen)

------------

If however, you're looking to modify the hierarchy to place Task below Story - so Epic > Story > Task > Sub-Task, there isn't a native way of doing this.

You'll need an app which offers more flexibility in the hierarchy - such as Structure.

Thanks @Ste Wright for your response.

So, it looks like this hierarchy "Epic > Story > Task" is not possible in Jira which is my actual question.

Hi @Alam

Natively, no.

You could just rename the sub-task issue type to "Task" - and remove it as standard issue type.

But it would be treated as a sub-task issue type regardless of its name.
