what's the best way to get a projected delivery date for a release?

Lisa Besteni July 27, 2020

I use the sprint and epic reports, as well as burn up and down charts but I'm trying to find out how I can best plug in the velocity of my team against the number a points in a release to see a estimated delivery date. Then, as the sprints progress, if we fall behind on completing points. to see what the new estimated delivery date is. Is there a way to do that in Jira?  Thanks for your help.

Hi @Lisa Besteni

The two tools in JIRA cloud that are intended to support this are the Version Report and the Epic Burndown Report, which you can read more about here:

https://support.atlassian.com/jira-software-cloud/docs/view-and-understand-the-version-report/

https://support.atlassian.com/jira-software-cloud/docs/view-and-understand-the-epic-burndown-report/

Both have some requirements and limitations, so it is good to read these articles before using them.  Two limitations neither handles well are

  • When capacity impacts velocity forecasts in the short-term
  • Having enough data (or a forecast of velocity) to start with an initial release forecast

You may want to supplement these with hand-drawn or spreadsheet forecasts until you better understand how they support your team's needs.

Best regards,

Bill
