why does jira 8.20.3 have a problem with reverse proxy

After moving to 8.20.3 (at least temporarily), we encountered problems with Dashboard gadgets and ended up being referred to the link https://confluence.atlassian.com/adminjiraserver0820/integrating-jira-with-apache-using-ssl-1095777617.html.

This just seems like overkill to our problem... Why does our 8.13.6 work fine, yet moving to 8.20.3 cause us to have to reconfigure our Apache server?

What did you have to change to get 8.20 to work?
