I would like a trigger for auto assigning when a logged in individual contributor pulls a work item into a column on the kanban board. I am looking in Jira Project Automation and cannot see one. Any help?
Moving an issue to any column is a visual way to execute a transition.
You can simply edit the project workflow to add a postfunction to the correspondent transition. That would be "assign to current user"
Hope it helps.
Excellent. Thank you for your response. Can you provide steps to edit the project workflow to add a post function to the transition?

It's quite simple, really.
If you visualize the workflow as a diagram you can double click on the transition you want to edit. From ther you can see the different options: add postfuntions, validation rules, etc

I guess is worked. Could you confirm? If so please mark the question as resolved so it can be of help for people with the same issue.

It does allow me to pull a card to an area that then opens up a transition screen. What I am looking for is a way for the user to have minimal interaction and not have to click auto assign in the transition. Eliminating waste per lean thinking. While your solution allows me to have a transition, it only eliminates one click, so in that case, my question is not resolved.

We can fix that :)
That transition screen appears only because the related transition has that particular screen associated. If you don't want anything to pop up you just have to configure the workflow accordingly.
Double click on the transition and make sure that no screen is associated to it. If you need to fill the fields that pop up on that transition you'll need to make those fields appear in the edit issue screen so they're accesible.
