Calendar gadget -- boxes

I am using the JIRA Dashboard and loaded in the calendar widget. Looking at it I know what the releases are, however, there are boxes at the top that change based on the Due, Created, Updated, Begin, End Date, but I can't find any documentation on what these boxes really mean, or represent. 

None of this documentation tells me what the issue count boxes represent.
