How can I search on a custom field using equals sign?

I've implemented a custom field through ScriptRunner, but I'm only able to search using the tilde symbol. If I try to use the equals symbol, the JQL button turns red and the search won't run.

Thanks Joel and Jamie. I'd hoped that the custom field would have worked similar to an Epic Link, but apparently it doesn't. Although not ideal, tilde should still be sufficient for our use case.

As Joel said it depends on the searcher in use for the field. You can try changing it to the Exact Text Searcher, although I'm not sure whether other things will work. Worth a try though.
