After you created the field, and set the template to number, did you also change the "searcher"? Go to the list of custom fields in the admin section, find the field and "edit" it (not "configure") - check that the searcher is set to "number range".
If it is not, then set it to number range, and run a re-index (doesn't need to be the full locking one, background one is fine, or even just index the projects it is set up for)
