Can I use automation for Jira to make a web request and set a field value based on the response?

I have an external web service that returns JSON.  I want automation for Jira to call my web service and then set a Jira field based on a field from the response I get.

Is this possible?

I don't know if you can achieve that with Jira Automation. But since nobody answered your question yet, I thought it might be useful to point out that if you can't, then there are other apps that can help you with that, such as JMWE or ScriptRunner.
