How do I import test steps into Zephyr

Kelli Robinson Tentea July 3, 2019

I am using Jira Cloud + Zephyr.  I have the zephyr test case importer utility, and am trying to load a set of test cases with test steps into the tool.  The utility is creating the test case details, but is missing the test steps.

We used the importer in 2017 successfully to load test cases and test steps.  Unfortunately, this no longer seems to be working.  I have reviewed previous suggestions to export a test cycle to analyze the field mapping, and reload it to see if succeeds.  Unfortunately, it does not work.

It seems that many people struggle with this. Is there another API that can load the test steps?  What has worked for others?

The only other thought is to check your delimiter setting in the Importer, although if you're getting test Name, Description & Priority through for a number of tests then you must have it set correctly.

surpringly, my colleuge with admin privileges was able to import the test cases and steps without any issues. i presume it is something to do with admin privileges.

thanks for your response.

That's weird that the permission setting lets you create a Test, but not import test steps etc....oh well, go figure.  Good luck!

We were having some issues at our end. We downloaded the latest version of the importer (v40) and upgraded to the latest version of Java.

We the got a 401 error connecting. The workaround is:

  1. Login to JIRA.
  2. Click on your icon on bottom left of navigation sidebar.
  3. Select "Profile".
  4. In new window, select "Manage your account".
  5. In next new window, select "Security" from sidebar.
  6. Now in the main screen, select "Create and manage API tokens".
  7. I created one called "ZephyrTestImport-Password" but not sure if other people can see ones I created, create a new one if required.
  8. Now copy this API key to clipboard and paste it in the password field in the zfj-importer-utility.
Hopefully by doing all of this your test steps will come through provided you have the correct mapping.

Do you see anything after you select the Zephyr D (Details) icon?  Otherwise provided you have the mapping set up right it should work.
