Where is Zephyr from the Jira OnDemand Trial?

Lisa Gibson September 5, 2013

I've activated my license, what looks to be twice now from my Atlassian dashboard, and need to understand how I can use Zephyr from Jira.

I have used Zephyr at another company and we also used Jira, and I wanted to utilize these product together here at my new company, but need to run a demonstration showing their usefulness together, but can't seem to get Zephyr displayed so I can input some sample test cases and attaching the Jira issue. I downloaded the Zephyr for Jira download, I downloaded Jira and verified the licensure for Zephyr for Jira, but don't see the Zephyr Dashboard I am used to seeing (which is displayed in the 4 screenshots that the software download screen references).

Please let me know what I have missed.

Thanks,

Lisa

Perfect on the details. I will tell you that it was the cloud based version, as I received an email as you described - "If you got a link to your JIRA instance, you have JIRA OnDemand." And the email clearly states: Welcome to the Cloud.

I'm currently investigating several options for this QA process and system(s) setup, and do indeed have a meeting with the entire IT Team next week. That's why I'm looking into my best option from the beginning of setting up this change control process, so I don't waste time on something that doesn't fit what we need (whether it is too big for our needs, or too limited in future growth) and waste the Developers time with another system they have to learn that ultimately is found to be not what is needed.

As well, it sounds like the Zephyr Community Edition would be what we would need, but I may need to rethink Jira.

I'll investigate further and get back to you with any additional questions.

Thanks,

Lisa

Hi Lisa,

Well, let's step back a bit and I'll try to explain where you've found yourself. Take a deep breath.

As a company, Zephyr sells two different test management products. One is called Zephyr for JIRA, the other is Zephyr Enterprise Edition. As well, we have a free version of the Zephyr Enterprise Edition called the Zephyr Community Edition.

Click on this link to see the three products listed out: http://www.getzephyr.com/buy/index.php

Now, you have to get your terminology straight to fully understand what is going on.

You mention that you downloaded JIRA OnDemand. This is actually impossible. JIRA OnDemand is JIRA's terminology for a cloud instance of JIRA. You can get access to an instance, but you can't actually download it. There is also JIRA OnPremise, which you maybe downloaded and installed on a local machine.

The difference between these two is very important, because the product Zephyr for JIRA only works in one of these types of instances. Zephyr for JIRA ONLY can be deployed in JIRA OnPremise installations.

Let's try a unique angle on getting an answer to my question. Did you download a 189 MB file to install JIRA on a local machine and run through a 5-10 minute install process? Or did you get a link in your email to your JIRA instance that was already up and running?

If you downloaded a 189 MB file to install JIRA you have JIRA OnPremise. If you got a link to your JIRA instance, you have JIRA OnDemand.

Now. Remember that I talked about how Zephyr sells two test management products. The other product, Zephyr Enterprise Edition, works in both deployment types of JIRA. So you can connect it to a JIRA OnDemand instance or a JIRA OnPremise instance.

And the Zephyr Enterprise Edition comes with a plugin called the Zephyr Enterprise Connector. This is part of the Zephyr Enterprise Edition deployment, though it plays a small role, not a big one.

The link you shared is located on Atlassian's JIRA site, and talks about connecting the Zephyr Enterprise Connector to JIRA OnDemand. This is not Zephyr for JIRA.

https://confluence.atlassian.com/display/AOD/Connecting+Zephyr+with+JIRA+OnDemand

So it looks like you're going to need make a few choices:

1. Are you going to use JIRA OnDemand or JIRA OnPremise?

2. Do you only want Zephyr for JIRA or would you also conisider Zephyr Enterprise or Community Editions?

In answering these questions, consider the following:

1. Zephyr for JIRA only deploys on JIRA OnPremise.

2. Zephyr Enterprise/Community Editions can connect to JIRA OnPremise or JIRA OnDemand.

I hope all this helps.

If you want, grab one of your IT team or tools team at your company to assist in your decission-making process.

Cheers, and have a great weekend.

Hi Lisa,

Zephyr for JIRA isn't yet offered on JIRA OnDemand. It is only supported on JIRA OnPremise Deployments.

Now your title asks for Zephyr from the JIRA OnDemand. But in the content of your email you talk about how you downloaded JIRA and downloaded Zephyr for JIRA. So I'm left a little confused what sort of deployment you have. Do you have an OnPremise Deployment of JIRA or an OnDemand deployment of JIRA?

Can you please clarify what steps you have done so far?

Kind Regards,
Chris

If you can, include the deployment type and version number of JIRA, as well as they exact name of the plugin you are downloading (This actually is important) and the Version Number of the plugin.

Hi Chris,

Here are the steps I've taken-

1. I downloaded Zephyr in Jira, which placed a je-1.7.3.1043.obr file on my local drive. If attempted to run, no program was found to run it.

2. So, I downloaded Atlassian OnDemand (the application's 'About Jira' shows it as Atlassian Jira v6.1-OD-06).

3. I went to the MyAtlassian page, via the link received in the confirmation email for downloading the Atlanssian OnDemand. I verified my license info for the Atlassian OnDemand and also saw where there was the Zephyr for Jira evaluation I downloaded that it appeared to have recognized and autofilled the license key info.

4. I then followed the directions at your site to 'Enable Zephyr in Jira' https://confluence.atlassian.com/display/AOD/Connecting+Zephyr+with+JIRA+OnDemand without a problem (I saw all steps outlined in that section and enabled it). But now it shows another instance of the Zephyr for Jira evaluation with a new license key number.

What am I missing? It's probably something obvious...like I need to download a full version trial of Zephyr or something, and it's not just a matter of utilizing your software and zephyr plugin?

Thanks for your help!

Lisa

Hi Oscar,

The Zephyr Enterprise and Community edition speak to JIRA via it's API structure. For enhanced metrics, the JIRA OnDemand plugin "Zephyr Connector" can also be installed.

Please note that Zephyr Enterprise and Community are standalone products and are not tied to JIRA for funtionality.

Regards,

Daniel
