Unable to select 'Due Date' to use

I only have the built in "Due Date" jira field but am unable to select it in the configuration OR in the workload application (I get an empty list of available fields to pick from for Due Date).

What to do? how to fix?

I found that its not necessary to set the 'due date' filed. the issues were not showing on workload as I had not start date value set on many of the issues.
