Trying to login to the community I need to input an auth code.

Huh?

An auth app? which one - the page doesn't tell me. I use several in my actual job.

No, we can't just use a text, that would be too simple an option.

Oh, well- Google provides an alternate approach.

If it is a brand new account then it might be looking for the code sent to the email as part of account registration/verification.

Otherwise I think It should not be asking for an auth code unless you elected to set up MFA on the account at some point. Or if it is an account that is Managed by a company that provided you with the email they may have imposed a multi-factor security rule on the account.
