Session-Handling with /sessions

rmoriz July 1, 2025

Sorry in advance if this is a dumb question: Do sessions store the context locally?

Wouldn't it make sense to either load a prior session automatically (based on directory/path) or ask the user to load?

From what I understand, starting with a new session nukes all context and wastes a lot of tokens?

Thank you!

Roland

Hey @rmoriz

That's not a dumb question at all!

Yes, Rovo Dev CLI does store session context locally. Each session, including your conversation history and context, is saved in your local directory under ~/.rovodev/sessions/.

You can list, restore, or fork previous sessions using the /sessions commands in interactive mode.

Currently, sessions are not automatically loaded based on directory/path, but you can manually restore a previous session relevant to your current work. Starting a new session does not load prior context, so restoring a session is the best way to avoid losing context and unnecessary token usage.

Tip: Use /sessions list to see your previous sessions and /sessions restore <id> to pick up where you left off. This helps you maintain continuity and save on tokens!

I hope that's helpful!

Kindest regards,

Jov
