Email alerts when a file or folder changes in git?

I would like to be able to configure email alerts when a file in git changes, or then contents of a folder in git changes.  Is there a way to do this in Stash or SourceTree?

You can set up scripts that are executed whenever an actual commit is made. But is this something specific & advanced in git itself, not sourcetree.
