fatal: could not read Password for 'https://[account-name]@github.com': Device not configured

Ryan Sherman April 6, 2018

Started receiving this error directly after updating to Sourcetree 2.7.2 when trying to push or pull. I have read a bunch of responses and tried everything recommended. My github account is currently setup with OAuth / HTTPS. I can view all of the remote accounts not push or pull.

I have tried removing the keychain, removing the account, restarting SourceTree and then restarting my MacBook Pro. I have tried this on existing repositories and cloning new repositories as well. Nothing has worked so far.

I have also tried using Basic with HTTPS and when I look at the keychain file the password shows only a single character. I even tried updating the keychain directly to no avail. I have lost 1.5 days trying to debug this issue now and I am not seeing any resolutions or responses to questions I have asked on other posts so I am trying to create another question in hopes of a response since I'm getting desperate. Please help!

Please don't create additional questions to elicit a more immediate response; it makes things more difficult for us as a small team trying to support our users.

If you are having difficulties with 2.7.2 and it's mission critical right now then I recommend using an older release from the Download Archives and monitoring the question you replied to earlier in the day.

Downgrading did the trick! Thanks so much @bgannin
