Rebranding? ✨ Here's a quick checklist to update your Atlassian products

Changing your company name? This can be an exciting evolution for any startup as you refine your company identity. ✨

It also comes with a checklist of updates to ensure everything aligns with your new brand. I've seen name changes happen quite a bit with startups, so I made you a handy guide to help you through the Atlassian side of things. 😁

This guide is only applicable if you don't have Atlassian Guard. If you do have Guard, you'll want to review the Guard support articles.

Here's the quick list of what needs to be changed:

✅ Atlassian account email addresses

✅ Product URL subdomain

✅ Confluence site title

✅ Atlassian organization name

I've included more details below, but please refer to the docs linked throughout for further questions and the most up-to-date information. Let's get into it! 👇

1. Update your Atlassian account email addresses

First things first, you'll want to update your Atlassian account email addresses. This process varies depending on whether you've verified your domain. To check if your domain is verified, navigate to Atlassian Administration (admin.atlassian.com) > Settings (or Directory) > Domains.

  • If your domain is unverified: The email address associated with the account can be changed by the user at any time:
    • Go to id.atlassian.com/manage-profile/email > Enter the new email address > Save changes
    • Check the inbox of the new email address to find the verification message.
    • Click Verify your email and follow the instructions to conclude the update.
  • If your domain is verified: This means it is a managed account, so users won't be able to directly update their email address. An Organization Admin will need to make the changes.
    • In Atlassian Administration (admin.atlassian.com) > select Directory in the top bar > select Managed accounts > locate the user's Atlassian account and edit the field values.
    • To update the email address of a managed account to another email address, make sure you've verified the new domain. Options for verifying your domain are here.

Getting an error? ❌

Did you get an error (screenshot below) when updating the email? Refer to this article, and follow the steps outlined in the "The email is already in use" section.

Error text: "Sorry, we couldn't change your email. Your email change request could not be processed because your email is already associated with another account.

2. Update your Product URL subdomain

Your product URL subdomain is the part of the URL that identifies your site; it's the "acme" in acme.atlassian.net.

  • Go to Atlassian Administration (admin.atlassian.com) > Select your organization if you have more than one > Products > Product URLs > Select Update URL for the site you want to update.
  • Enter the beginning of the new site URL > Continue.
  • You'll see the list of products that will use the new URL. Select Update to confirm you want to change the URLs.

For additional details, review this doc.

3. Change the Confluence site title

The site title appears in your browser's title bar. By default, it's set to "Confluence". To change the title of your Confluence Cloud instance:

  • In Confluence, select the wheel icon (⚙️) in the top-right corner to open Confluence administration.
  • Find Settings > Configuration > General configuration.
  • In the Confluence title field, enter a new site title > Save configuration changes.

4. Change your Atlassian organization name (optional, but recommended)

Finally, I recommend updating your Atlassian organization name. This change is visible only to admins (it doesn't have any effects on end users), but will help you keep the admin side of things updated.

  • Go to Atlassian Administration (admin.atlassian.com) > Select the Organization > Settings > Change the Organization name > Save.

By following these steps, you'll ensure that your Atlassian products reflect your new company identity. Here's to new beginnings and your continued growth!
