Introducing the global preview panel: All the context, right where you work

Hi everyone Wave,

We’re excited to announce a major step forward in how teams work across Jira, Confluence, and the Atlassian platform: the global preview panel. This new feature delivers a unified, modern side panel experience, making it to preview, reference, and act on related or connected content – without losing your place or cluttering your screen.

Why we built this

For most teams, work doesn’t live in just one place. Today’s teams rely on both Confluence and Jira to plan, document, and deliver work. But switching between tabs, windows, or using inconsistent side panels can break your focus and slow you down. We heard from admins and end users alike that a consistent experience across Atlassian tools is critical for productivity and satisfaction.

The global preview panel was built to solve this. Now, whether you’re drafting a strategy document in Confluence or tracking work progress in Jira, you can instantly preview and interact with related content – like Confluence pages, Jira work items, Goals, Teams, and Projects – right from where you’re working. No more context switching, no more lost momentum.

What's launching & how it works

With the new global preview panel, you’ll see a resizable side panel across Jira and Confluence. Here’s what you can expect:

  • Check Unified side panel with seamless previews: Click on a link or related object (such as a Confluence page, Jira work item, Project, etc) and the preview opens in a side panel – directly in your current view.

  • Check Instant actions: Take action on linked content (like commenting, editing, or updating status) or cross-reference content without leaving your current tab.

  • Check One panel at a time: Keep your workspace clutter-free and focused.

  • Check Drag to resize: Adjust the panel to fit your workflows and preferences.

  • Check Modern, consistent experience: A consistent look and feel across Atlassian apps, so you always know what to expect.

Here’s a few examples of what this experience will look like in your workflow:

Clicking on a linked Goal in a Jira work item

What's in it for you?

How is this different from Smart Links?

Smart Links let you see rich previews of Jira and Confluence content, but clicking them used to open a new tab or modal. With the global preview panel, you get a seamless, in-context side panel – so you can stay focused and connected to the work you’re doing.

Where and when you'll see it

The global preview panel will be available in Jira and Confluence starting October 2025, with support for additional Atlassian products rolling out through 2026.

We can’t wait for you to experience a more connected, productive way to work across Jira and Confluence. Have questions or feedback? Drop them in the comments below – we’d love to hear from you!

Thanks for being part of the journey,

The Atlassian Team

Hello!

Very nice feature, im just curious would it be customizable? for instance if im showing a jira Panel, could an admin customize what fields are visible in the panel?

Looking forward to trying this - we have a combined Confluence & Jira workflow, so hopefully this will improve consistency, bringing the two platforms together.

Nice! I see benefit in this and am looking forward to this ...

However, from the gifs above, it almost seems like this is why Atlassian decided to move the Status field under the Summary? As per https://community.atlassian.com/forums/Jira-articles/Easier-status-updates-for-work-items/ba-p/3068881

Please do look into that and cater for this first though - https://jira.atlassian.com/browse/JRACLOUD-96247

Thank you

@Baylee Robards will this be available in Jira Service Management at launch?

We've been noticing a greater disconnect between Jira and JSM features lately, especially around UI elements. It's been confusing and frustrating to our users that work in both tools as well as our admin teams that need to support all users.

@Julien Haynes Hi Julien! We support the same customization as full page work item today which includes: what fields are shown, hiding when empty, order for context fields, etc.

For Team Managed Projects: this can be done via Work item type settings (in the Project settings -> Work Types -> [Work item Type name] -> Settings).

For Company Managed Projects: this can be done via Project settings (in the Project settings -> Work items -> Screens -> Screen Scheme settings which can be set by Jira admin).

This change will be reflect both in the global preview panel and full page work item view.

Please let me know if you have additional questions. Thank you!

@Yatish Madhav Hi Yatish! The Status field was moved under the Summary to keep things consistent between the panel and full-page views, so it's easier to find and update.

That said, we know teams have different preferences, especially for important fields like Status. While we're aiming for a unified experience, we're also keeping an eye on feedback (like yours!) and looking into more customization options down the line. I've bumped your feedback to our product team. Thanks for sharing your perspective – it really helps us make Jira better.

@Josh Hey Josh, thanks for the question and feedback. Global preview panel is only Jira Cloud for this initial launch, but expanding to JSM is definitely something we are considering. Please stay tuned!

I've also shared your feedback on feature and UI disparities between Jira/JSM with our product team – really appreciate you taking the time to share your perspective.
