Board Navigation changes, based on Community feedback

Hello everyone! In recent weeks, we have received valuable feedback from users regarding the board switching experience in the latest version of Trello, which is currently being rolled out. We truly appreciate your insights, suggestions, and patience. We are excited to share some of the enhancements that we will be releasing in the next few weeks to address your feedback.

Ability To Pin Board Switcher

We’ve seen that for some users it is very important to retain a list of their boards, available without an extra click. To address this feedback we will be adding the ability for users to pin the board switcher as a panel that can be expanded/collapsed - so that you can continue switching between your boards in a familiar manner. Now you can search as well as quickly switch between boards that span different workspaces.

To switch from the current popover board switcher to the pinned version, click the board switcher button located in the button navigation. Then, click the … icon in the top right corner and select the pinned board switcher option.

List View In Board Switcher

While the majority of users love seeing their board represented as very visual tiles in the board switcher, we have heard from many users that they would prefer to see them more of traditional list. To address this feedback we will be adding the ability for users to toggle between our current tile view and a more traditional list view.

To switch to list view, click on the board switcher button in the button navigation and click the list/grid icon in the top right.

Other Improvements To Board Switcher

In addition to the improvements above, we will also be making some other small tweaks to the board switcher to help remove friction in the board switching process. This will include 1) switching to vertical scroll instead of horizontal scroll for the starred/recent sections, 2) giving users the ability to collapse the star/recent sections and 3) remembering which workspaces/sections you had expanded/collapsed.

These are some great changes. I have been getting used to the new board switcher and although I like it, I think these improvements are a welcome addition.

Thanks @Alexandros Mathopoulos for these improvements heading in the right direction! 👏👏

However, there's still a major UX issue: accessing Calendar/Timeline views went from 1 click to 4 steps (b → workspace → scroll → click).

For teams using these views daily, this is a major regression. These features were pitched as game-changers but are now buried in menus.

Question: Are improvements planned to restore direct access to workspace views?

Glad to see positive changes being made based on user feedback! Are there going to be changes made to the cards themselves in reference to the previous set up being more user friendly with all of the card options being on the right hand side for easy one-click selections?

When will these changes roll out to everyone? I don't see the two new buttons next to the board switcher search bar. I've refreshed and logged out/back in but nothing yet.

One question: Does Trello remember our previous List View toggle choice or do we need to toggle every time we open the board switcher?

@Alexandros Mathopoulos Following up on this thread. I still don't see the three dots in the Board Switcher that would allow me to dock the panel on the left. Looks like my Trello has not been updated yet. When will this roll out to everyone?

You rolled the new version out on my assistant's Trello, but this new option doesn't show up. Now she's stuck with the awful new view.

New version rolled out to me but there is no option to pin the board list to the left, which is the key feature everyone seems to want returned. How can I enable this?

I also don't have this feature - I can switch from grid view to list view, but there is only that button available in the top corner. The three dot button does not appear.

As of today, I am still not seeing the option to pin the board switcher—no three dots. The list view is there, and it works, but nothing else is showing on my end. If it is an admin option that needs to be changed, please do let us know.

In this new update, when I click on a card that lives on another board, Trello will take me to the card, close it, and leave me looking at the board. I must either hit the back button on my browser, or search for it on the board. Please correct the auto-close.

This is super exciting to see! I've noticed, though, that I don't have that option yet to pin the board switcher. Is this being rolled out, or should everyone see it by now? @Alexandros Mathopoulos

Hi @Kelly Gabel! Not quite yet. Our engineering team is working very hard on getting this out there asap and should have it ready in the next few weeks. We are just putting some final touches on it now : )
