Adding custom field to an email

Hi all - I'm trying to add a custom field to an email through Butler.  

I've searched this extensively and the correct answer seems to be to use {{%nameofcustomfield}} and add that to the rules for the message of the email, but I can't get it to work.  The email sends, but the custom field doesn't show. 

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
