Any way to turn off the escaping of special characters when creating a card by email?

Ramanuj Basu September 9, 2019

I see that—apparently effective on September 6th—special characters such as the asterisk are now escaped via "\" so they appear as-is when a card is created via email.

For years now, I've been using a combination of an online form and Trello's email-to-card capability to automatically create a Trello card on our content board for each story idea submitted by a member of our team. As part of that, I've specifically titled the form fields things like "**Submitted By**" so that "Submitted By" appears in bold in the description of the card. It really helps when scanning the card for information.

Now, however, I see that that line is appearing as "**Submitted By**" instead of as "Submitted By" as before.

Does anyone know if there's a way to turn off this escaping of special characters when cards are created via email?

TIA

Hi, Ramanuj!

That's odd! I almost had a heart attack when reading this as I also have forms set up to use Markdown, but when I tested it just now, mine is functioning as expected (Markdown works and is applied in cards created via email).

I would definitely contact Trello support through the Help section on your account to see if they can help pinpoint what's going on. I'm hoping, for your sake and my own, that this is just a fluke that can be fixed on your end and not an actual change coming down the pipe :)

Hope this helps!

Thanks for the data point. I guess I'm relieved to know it's not happening for everyone, but dismayed to find out that I'm so "special."

Hm. We all use the free plan; I wonder if that (suddenly) makes a difference.
