I don’t typically use archiving and tried it today. The item remained in my board. Shouldn’t it have disappeared from the board? Could it have something to do with the monthly repeater on that item?

An archived item won't show on your board, but it'll continue to repeat the cards if it has the repeater enabled on it.
You can easily see this by clicking on the Repeater Power-up button on your board.
