Can I copy & move a list from one board to another, still able to edit my comments in both boards?

Ian Campbell April 15, 2018

Can I move/copy a list from one board to another, so that I have that list plus 'my' comments on both boards, without losing the ability to 'edit' comments on either list?

If I simply 'move' the list to a new board, I can edit the comments on the new board. However, I no longer have the list on the original board.

If I 'copy' the list to the new board, I lose the ability to edit comments.

I hoped I could copy the list on the original board, move that copy to the new, and retain the ability to edit the comments. But no. As soon as you copy, even on the same board, you lose the ability to edit.

Not even 'copy board' will transfer comments.

My reason/aim?

I have a master board of teaching content, which includes my comments, which I want to use quickly and easily in different contexts - in this case, with different classes in a college. But at present, if I want to edit a comment, which includes moving it from one position to another in the list, I have to write up a new comment with all the info of the old. (Hope that makes sense.)

Hi @Ian Campbell,

You can now accomplish this using the Unito power-up (currently a featured power-up on the Trello Power-Ups page). We allow syncing of cards across multiple boards so you're not wasting time re-entering information on more than one card. I'd recommend taking a look at the two resources I've posted as below as well. Our Trello + Trello integration page that clearly explains how you can use Unito in Trello, and a webinar/tutorial on 'Creating a Master Board in Trello' which you may also find useful.

Trello + Trello (http://bit.ly/2ZXqwhe)

Master Board Webinar/Tutorial (http://bit.ly/2OB4oIa)

Let me know if you've found these helpful. I'm here if you have any questions, or need any further assistance!

Best,

Unito

Thanks for your confirmation Alice.

At present, I am doing Copy List, Move List. I think this will be the same workload as copying into Card Description and then returning to comments. (There are reasons it wouldn't be effective remaining in Card Description.)

I did see another post in which someone was asking about 'mirroring'. I can't work out the exact meaning of this 'mirroring' and whether it would help me. Instead of copying my master board, could I mirror it and then take off the mirror so the new board is independent to go its own way?

I got stuck on step 1, which asks you to open two boards simultaneously, without telling you how. When I open a new board it closes and replaces the old.

The mirroring questioner's latest post reads:

Mirror Card To Different Board

Works? :)

Unfortunately, I'm not an expert in this field, but I've found something here that might be useful for you. You can actually mirror cards, but with the help of Power-Ups.

Also, another method could be to use the Related Cards & Boards feature, where you basically add cards and boards as attachments. Here is a full article about it.

I use the second method and I love it, but I'm not sure if it's helpful for you, I'm sorry.

Thanks for the suggestions Alice. Interesting, but as you suspected not really what I'm after - which seems far simpler!

I'm afraid it isn't possible. As you said, the only way to still have your comments on your cards would be to move the list because copying it will just copy the cards with labels and attachments (optional) but without any comments.

If your comments are useful for your work, maybe you could add them to the card descriptions and then copy the cards to other boards. The description box can always be edited.
