Changing Avatar colour

My team members haven't customised avatars with photos we just use the default initials.  However, one of my team member's initials are in a purple circle while everyone else's are in the default grey.  He just assumed his initials were only purple to him.  He is not aware of having done anything to make them this way. Any thoughts as to why his are a different colour?  I certainly can't work out a way to do this - useful as it would be.
