Random users appearing in invites

Steve Basford March 29, 2022

I hope somebody can help on a fundamental query.

When I go to invite users to a board , many users that have no association with myself or our account are auto-suggested. They are not members of the workspace or the board.  Where is this coming from, how to turn this off?

It looks very much like a bug

thanks

You can reach Trello's support team at http://www.trello.com/contact — if you have a Standard or Premium Trello subscription you can ask any question and speak to someone on the team. If you use Trello for free, you'll have more limited support options and will be directed here to the Community for most requests.

Hi @Steve Basford,

When you invite someone by username or by their account's public name, Trello will show you a list of suggestions to help you find the right person. If the person you want to invite shares a similar name with other Trello users you could see a list of irrelevant users. It's understandable to be concerned, but this isn't a bug! I'd encourage you to invite people to your board using their email address to make sure you're inviting the right person.

If it helps to ease some of your concerns, people can't see your board until you invite them or unless your board is set to public visibility. Hope it helps.

Many thanks.  A very strange way of working indeed, unfamiliar to users and adds to the security risk greatly by increasing the chances of inviting another in error.

And it appears that this can't possibly be of benefit to anybody.  Is the products view that one of those 6 users it offers that are unknown to your account, , from thousands of randoms around the world, could possibly  be the one you're looking for ?  And to top it off, identical names appear, so you have no idea who they are.

It doesn't appear to make any sense as a feature.  Can anybody explain a real useful use case, that trumps the security risk it presents?

Further more, it included users that have not yet confirmed their email and  blocked users (trello suggesting you may wish to add blocked members).

Anybody have any further insight to this, its a very strange way of working, unlike any other product.  Anybody think of a reason why this might be a good idea?  Anyway to feedback to the Atlassian as an issue?

Hi @Steve Basford, my understanding is that this is common for many "social networks" and Trello followed a similar format. Trello's staff does monitor these forums but I'd encourage you to submit feedback to the team directly via a ticket at http://www.trello.com/contact so you can talk with a team member directly.
