Butler rule - create new card ?

janrogowski September 9, 2020

There doesn't seem to be any way to create a card with a RULE using the Butler power up.

eg. when I move a card to a specific list this triggers the generation of a new card somewhere else.

This is doable right?

I can't believe it, but I think you're right: there doesn't seem to be a direct "create card" action.

I think you could hack it though, in the following way:

1. add a checklist to the card you moved to the list. give it a unique name "disposable checklist"

2. add an item "new card" to the checklist "disposable checklist"

3. use the cascade action "for each checklist item in a checklist named `disposable checklist`" followed by "convert the item to a linked card <in list> <name of your target list> in <name of your target board>.

Then delete the checklist "disposable checklist".

The net result should be a new card in the list.

Ingenious workaround. I will test this, thank you!

Let me know if you got it to work. I tested it out & it worked fine for me. You can also set the card name if you always want the same name, or if you want it to inherit the name from one of the trigger-card's characteristics.

You're a genius. This totally works.

when a card is added to list "to here", add an empty checklist named "disposable" to the card, add item "{triggercardname}" to checklist "disposable", for each checklist item in a checklist named "disposable", convert the item to a linked card in list "new here", find a card titled "{triggercardname}" in list "{triggercardlistname}", and remove the "disposable" checklist from the card

Whether this workaround should have to exist is another matter!

Thanks guys. I figured the workaround of dummy board/card copy/paste but it just seemed (and seems) bonkers to me that there was no facility to generate a new card.

From what I've seen this functionality has been lost from the transition between ButlerBot and Butler power up.

Also, and I caveat this with being very new to Butler, but I find the performance a bit slow. Moving cards between lists with rules for move/copy to other lists on other boards works but relies on the user being somewhat patient and allowing Trello to catch up with actions already performed. I have seen instances where cards moved multiple times in rapid succession appears to have muddled the order of Butler commands with unexpected consequences.

@janrogowski "From what I've seen this functionality has been lost from the transition between ButlerBot and Butler power up."

Yes quite a few things were removed when ButlerBot became a power up (the basis of the now integrated versoin).

"but I find the performance a bit slow"

Then you wouldn't have liked ButlerBot ;) the performance since it was acquired and integrated is 10x faster

I wondered if there was any priority being given to paid up business or enterprise customers. I'm on the business trial and not yet committed

@janrogowski there's no create card, but you can copy a card by using "lookup card with link XYZ and copy it to list ABC"
