I'm not able to get the planner section to work.

I was so excited to use the new planner section on trello, but I can't get it to work.  I've given it permission to connect with my google calendar, and google reports that it gave permission, but still says to connect a calendar.  I'm trying this on my macbook on the web, not the app on my phone.  I have tried numerous times, same thing always happens.

I think it's best to reach the support team on behalf of the issue. This feature is in Beta.
If you need an immediate solution that works, you may consider third-party Trello power-up — Planyway calendar for Trello. It supports 2-way sync. Here's the guide on how to set it up.
