Is there a way to backup Trello boards on internal server?

Claire Green June 16, 2020

We would like to have a redundant backup of our trello boards elsewhere than the cloud for data security/management best practices reasons.

Is there a way to do that?  Any recommended strategies?

If in Trello you choose Menu - More - Print and Export then you can export your Trello board contents in JSON to save and back up locally.     I'm not sure if this could be used to automatically restore a board, but at least the data would not be completely lost in the hypothetical worst case scenario.

Thank you Dan!  I appreciate it. Will investigate!    Claire

@Claire Green @Dan Crosby you can also automate this with Google Sheets:

Using Google Backup and Sync would also allow you to keep a local copy of this. Still doesn't do restore, but at least you don't have to remember to back it up.

I just was shown this by a colleague

One can export to JSON but no way to import the info back. (Though one could search for lost info and manually restore it piecemeal.)

This service works both ways. Still in beta though.

Hey Claire!

So happy you found us. Rewind's Backups for Trello Power-Up runs daily, automated backups of your Trello boards, lists, cards, and more. You can also run a backup any time if your team is making a lot of changes to a board or testing a new Power-Up.

Should you wish to restore a board back to a previous version, you can swiftly do that in the Rewind Vault.

With our product, you don't need to worry about exports and imports – everything is automated and you can recover data on-demand as you need.

If you have any questions, please comment here or send me an email at dasha@rewind.io.

Hi @Claire Green

I've developed a solution that both backs up and restores Trello boards.  Am I able to discuss this with you over email initially to get your feedback/thoughts?

Cheers,

Jeremy

It looks like there is a Power-Up called Board Export that allows exporting of Boards/Lists in various formats. The formats are of varying utility in reconstructing data should that be necessary, and they don't appear to necessarily include all Board/List information, but you may be able to at least get up and running with the export--and the formats are definitely easier to read than JSON.
