My profile photo is screwed up

I have tried to upload a photo as my avatar, and everytime I do so, it only shows a sliver of it, rotated, and on the left side of the image. I have tried opening and re-saving the image and clearing my cache.

How do I get my profile photo to show properly?

I designed a 500 x 500 px image in canva, and that seems to work, but it would be nice if I could just crop a photo where I wanted it to be cropped, and have it show up properly.
