Notify Someone when Card is Marked as Complete

Within my Trello board, I want to notify someone (or several people) when a card is marked as complete by someone else on the team. This will then serve as a trigger to move other things into motion. How do I do this?

Hi @Nicole Turchin ! Welcome to the community :) Trello's default notifications don't cover when someone marks a card as complete (assuming you're referring to checking the due date completion box in a card), but if you were to move the card to a "Complete" list, then anyone watching the card, list, or board will be notified of this transition.

If you'd like to set up a custom notification, you can use butler automation for this as you mentioned. Your trigger would be "when the due date is marked as complete in a card". The action would be to either:

A) add a comment to the card - this will notify all watchers by default
B) send an email - you can send this to multiple email addresses, or send it to every member of the card/board

Alternatively, the butler command could say "when the due date is marked as complete in a card, move it to the "Complete" list" and this would trigger a default notification for all watchers.

Thank you for this. 

I'm trying to avoid having everyone go in and "watch" a card. As the owner of most of our boards, I'd like to be able to go in and say:

"When someone has moved this card to a completed list, notify the following people..." and I would choose who those individuals are. 

I'd like to set these versus asking all team members to do it. So, I would look at a card and think,

"When this card is done, I want to notify team member 1, 2, 3, and 4." Then for a different card it might be, "When this card is done, I want to notify team member 5, 7 and 9."

Would it require someone moving a card to a completed list though? There's no way for someone to simply check the card as complete and for the notification action to them be triggered?

@Nicole Turchin in that case, it would just be a matter of creating a butler command as mentioned above:

when the due date is marked as complete in a card, send an email to...

You would need a way to tell Trello which members need to be notified. Based on what you said, it should work dynamically depending on the card. So, you'd need to define who these people are within the card (whether that's just adding them as members of the card, or inputting the email addresses elsewhere like in a custom field).

Is there a way I can setup a rule that will alert others?

For example, "When (x) card is marked as complete, notify person 1, person 2, and person 3, automatically?

Hello, Nicole. I guess that all members who are "watching" the card will be notified.

You can, aditionally, write a comment with "@all" to notify all people on the card or on the board.

You can either choose to notify all or notify specific people on your board.
