Why is the "last updated" date of a card updated when the card moves in a lane?

Dennis Briner March 13, 2025

Reproduce:

  • Lets say you have a simple Kanban board with 2 lanes: Backlog, Done
  • Now you move 1 card from Backlog to Done.
  • This will move this card to the top of Done (which makes sense)
  • It will also move ALL other cards in Done down, meaning their position changes by +1 (makes sense too)
  • Now when you later search for cards, most recently updated cards show (makes sense)

Error:

  • The search will list all cards in Done as they have all just been updated because their position was changed (this makes no sense at all)

Expected:

  • When a card's position is automatically changed it should not change the card's last updated date

Can anyone tell me if this can somehow be "disabled" … or file a bug report?

This issue makes the entire search function useless as it will mostly include just out-dated cards 🤷‍♂️

Hello @Dennis Briner
Just yesterday, I filed a support ticket with an issue with an automation. My intention was to create a rule where, after a few days of inactivity, cards with a specific name in a specific list would be moved to another list. When a card joins a list, it displaces the other cards in that list. This move, although not recorded as an activity in the card log, is considered an activity for Trello. It makes some sense, but causes some inconvenience for the user. Therefore, my rule didn't work because of the "constant activity" of the cards in that list. Currently, there's no option in automations to do what I'm suggesting, only to move ALL cards that have been in a list for X days. Hopefully, you can find a solution to avoid these issues.

Hi @Dennis Briner, welcome to the Atlassian Community!

I couldn't replicate this issue. Could you please provide the following details?

  • How are you moving the cards? For instance, are you dragging and dropping them, or are you using the "Move" button on the card back?
  • How are you searching for the cards? Are you using any search operators?
  • Are you utilizing any automation on your board?
  • Do you have any active Power-Ups?

Hi @Carolina Lopez ,

Thanks for looking into this.

  • How are you moving the cards? For instance, are you dragging and dropping them, or are you using the "Move" button on the card back?
    -> drag and drop OR move – it doesn't seem to matter
  • How are you searching for the cards? Are you using any search operators?
    -> I use the trello search feature (https://trello.com/search). I usually sort by "last updated" with the intention to find the most relevant cards first
  • Are you utilizing any automation on your board?
    -> No
  • Do you have any active Power-Ups?
    -> No

I just tried the same thing in my board and the behavior is still occurring. In this search I find so many cards that have never been touched, but their date last updated is the same as when the last card was moved to the "Done" list.

Interestingly though, I created a new test board where I cannot reproduce this issue 🤔

All I can say is that it must by caused by something running automatically as my search above lists 121 cards, all with "Updated 5 days ago", and I can say for sure that we didn't touch 121 cards on that single day.

Could it be an issue that only happens in large boards/lanes? Containing 500+ cards?
