What happened to the search tool in trello, that allowed you to search just open cards on the board?

It still exists, but it moved and was renamed to "Filter" - the button is now in the board header (so you don't need to keep the right hand side menu open to search anymore). See https://support.atlassian.com/trello/docs/filtering-for-cards-on-a-board/
