I had a number of Boards pre the upgrade with Atlassian but recently logged in and can't find them. Do i need to upgrade or is there a way to find them while on the free version?

Welcome to the Community! I think your boards are just closed. Trello doesn't automatically delete information, so I'd double check the closed boards section and re-open them: https://help.trello.com/article/781-reopening-a-closed-board
A free Workspaces can only hold 10 open boards, so you may have to a) upgrade b) move boards to a new Workspace or c) close some open boards if you want to open up closed boards. Trello also have a contact form available at https://trello.com/contact in case you need direct support from them.
