Miscellaneous Monday: How dull would the life be without colors?

I think that everyone in their childhood was drawing some pictures with crayons, thinking that her/his work is a masterpiece… and definitely it was a masterpiece 😉

As a child, I loved drawing clothes, dreaming that one day I’d become a clothes designer (Hopefully, I’ve changed my mind). I was spending hours on creating designs and then coloring them :)

Today is the day of the most nostalgic childhood essential - the crayon!

 So, Happy Crayon Day! 🖍️🎨

What’s interesting, crayons have been adding colors to our lives for over a century. The first box of crayons was introduced in 1903! It offered eight classic colors: black, brown, orange, violet, blue, green, red, and yellow. Since then, the world has seen the rise of neoen, metallic, and even glitter crayons, which have been making drawings more vivid!

However, over the years, some colors have been retired (🥁 drumroll … always on March 31), making way for new shades to inspire creativity.

Share your story related to crayons or what was your go-to crayon color as a kid (or maybe is now :) Let’s make this Monday colourful 💙💛💜

 P.S. My go-to color was green 💚

Fun post! There's a list of the retired colors - https://www.crayola.com/faq/another-topic/what-are-the-names-of-the-retired-crayon-colors/

Dandelion was always a favorite of mine and it was brought back in this limited-time pack: https://shop.crayola.com/color-and-draw/limited-edition-retired-crayons-8-count-5230190000.html

Such a "childhood memory" question, @Daria Kulikova_GitProtect_io -- thank you! I recall always having a 64-crayon box and loved having so many options. I would draw stuff just to use the colors, and even make different sides or parts of shapes a different color to see if it "matched" or not, maybe since color coordination is definitely not a talent I possess! But maybe it's also because I use color for organization of almost everything now.

@Amanda Barber , thanks for the link to retired crayon colors, I'll buzz by there and try to find colors I used as a kid. Didn't even know Crayola provided that info!

Coloring books played a large role in my childhood, especially on cold, wet days.

My favorite crayon story involves my niece. When she was about 3, I was babysitting one evening. She sat with a big pad of white paper and a box of crayons. She would take each crayon and scribble on the page, then move on to another color.

When she pulled out the white crayon, she scribbled, scribbled again, and then held it out to me and said "this one doesn't work."

I had (have?) moments when I would like to draw something. One of the biggest inspirations was while were at the summer vacation at the seaside and we would usually stay inside at those peak hours when it comes to just being too hot to even be near the sea.
Anyway, there was some beach ball where the "Sponge Bob" character was illustrated and I just took the crayons and decided to draw mine ✏️

I remember being quite proud of that sketch considering I was 12-ish at the time lol

The last few things I drew were about dragons as I was quite obsessed with those in the past. (would need to spend some time searching as they apparently got lost) 🐉

Funny you should ask. The answer is "not dull at all!"

I'm red green colorblind, like about 1 in 12 men around here. So I see approx 3 distinguishable colors in a rainbow, used to color the sky purple in kindergarten etc.

But if you've never seen the normal range of colors, it's just fine. There are a few jobs we choose not to do, but mostly you'd never know.

Sorry I'm so late to the party.  I've kept this because I really wanted to respond.  This is a great topic @Daria Kulikova_GitProtect_io !  Green is also my go-to colour!

Having two small children we have been been doing a ton of colouring.  My son really enjoys drawing robots and my daughter enjoys colouring Paw Patrol characters or unicorns.

Sad spoiler alert!

As a kid, my parents would never buy us the 64 or 128 Crayola crayon box. It was a lower middle class thing - my parents felt that 64 was excessive. so we never had more than 32, and most often the 16 crayon set was the one we would get. ☹️

But for my kids, we never skimped on arts and crafts, and my children have had every crayon color and type possible - normal, pastels, etc.

I personally enjoy using colored pencils more than crayons. I'm a bit OCD (I am sure those that know me are shaking their heads in confirmation right now) and find the lines I make with pencils sharper. That being said, I will pick up a crayon whenever I just want to doodle and take my mind off of things. And my go to is always burnt orange! 🧡
