Pledge 1% - What do y'all do?

Hi everyone,

so I was wondering what your company or your colleagues or teams are doing or have done around the Pledge 1% initiative?

I would love to hear what causes you supported and which actions you took.

Thanks for sharing (and caring)!

Adaptavist is now too large for me to know what everyone is up to, so I can't speak for most of us any more.

But @Phill Fox is shortly about to deliver a van load of humanitarian aid to Ukraine.  If I understood correctly, the plan was to deliver a lot of much-needed supplies to Przemyśl, where people from Rozdoum can fetch it easily and deliver it to where it might be best used.  But I think there might be two vehicles going now, because we've got a lot of stuff to deliver, and we're giving them the van too.  Which Phill bought himself, outside Adaptavist.

Phill will of course correct me if I'm wrong, I'm just trying to get him involved in this conversation so he has a blatant "in" to talk about it.

On the more mundane day-to-day stuff, I pick up small pieces of work with some of the UK's charities.

  • I am a cat person (who also wants a dog, but we're not ready yet), the last six I've lived with (out of the nine I think of as "my cat") were/are all rescued by the Cat Protection League.  Different branches work in different ways, but the ones near here who use Atlassian ask me if they're stuck.
  • My friend works for an armed forces veteran charity that uses Atlassian stuff, but she doesn't need my help, she's smarter than I.  If she did, I'd drop everything.
  • I do some stuff for the Royal National Institute of the Blind, Age UK, and Marie Curie Cancer Care.  It's historical and totally random - I worked with them before Atlassian existed, but stayed involved and a couple are doing the Atlassian thing.
  • The arguably naughty one I also do is work with a local church.  I am a lot more secular than Atlassian.  My level of truth is "evidence-based", which means "probably more atheist than Stephen Hawking".  Atlassian just asks for "secular".  We have a church here that is the main provider of shelter for homeless people in the town.  I donate and offer counselling when I can.

Thanks @Nic Brough -Adaptavist- for the "in".

So to pick up the first bit. Yes we have plans well underway to take two van loads of humanitarian aid to the Polish/Ukraine border.  Think of this as sleeping bags, powerbanks, lights, gas cookers etc.  We will be departing in a couple of weeks time and will be doing a video blog of the trip to inspire others.

This will be my second humanitarian trip across having already completed one with the British International Search and Rescue Dog team.

So for my Pledge1% I include training a Search and Rescue dog for missing person searches.

Also do some work with my old university and also support a number of technology meetups/incubator meetings.

Note the search dogs are not going....
