What to visit at Carcassonne & arround (South of France)

Deleted user July 14, 2022

Cité de Carcassonne

  • 2,500 years of history, it was a Gaulish settlement then in the 3rd century AD
  • Lady Carcas has given her name for the city
  • The Cité dyes itself red for the national day of France on July 14 with fabulous fireworks

Bram and his circulade

  • A circulade is a very special type of construction, the city is built in circles around the church
  • It's the largest Circulade of old named country "Languedoc-Roussillon" with 3,5 circles

The Cassoulet festival in Castelnaudary

  • Music with a golden cassoulet = good evenings at the end of August
  • My aunt won a national competition for the production of Cassoulet in the Amateur category

03 Casteldenaudary.jpg

Lastours and its 4 castles

  • Need to take a little height and steep passages? There is no more beautiful than Lastours!
  • They have not been habited since the end of the 16th century
  • Classified "Historic Monument" since 1905

04 Lastours.jpeg

Limoux, at the gateway to the Pyrenees

  • Its "Place de la République" is the center of everything (Coffee shops, Events,...)
  • The Aude gorges are great to see too
  • This city will be crossed by Tour de France the 2022-07-19
  • All that remains is to drink some blanquette (with moderation)

05 Limoux.jpg

Narbonne facing the sea

  • Before the sea, you can visit the most beautiful market in France and its Halles recently elected by the French people
  • You can visit the neighbourhood house of Charles Trenet, a famous singer in France between 30s and 60s

06 Narbonne.jpeg

The numerous lakes of the Montagne Noire

  • Lampy's Lake, The Camazes, The Ganguise are all in Aude
  • Not in Aude but Montagnès Lake is good for a fresh rest
  • Not in Aude too but not far away: Saint-Ferréol, the first lake that fills the Canal du Midi

07 Lac de Montagnès.jpg

Canal du Midi, the famous

  • Created by Pierre-Paul Riquet, he doesn't saw the end of him masterpiece
  • 63 locks along the 240 km (149,13 miles) some of which are double, triple or even more

08 Canal du Midi.jpg

Gruissan, the quiet corner of Mediterranean Sea

  • Its port, like Sète, is well known
  • The best beach is that of the chalets

09 Gruissan.png

Others "little" things to visit

  • Cabrespine Giant Chasm
  • Village of Lagrasse
  • The abbeys of Saint-Papoul and Fondfroide (Narbonne)
  • Alet-les-Bains and the Casino

10 Cabrespine.jpg

Final thing, in France, we use numbers for each country (Departement) and Aude have the number 11

That's all for me, have a nice day or afternoon or night, it all depends where you live and I hope you taken pleasure with this trip of my Departement. Bye!

Wow! This is an amazing virtual tour of Carcassonne!

As an avid cyclist, I'll now be paying extra special attention to Stage 15 & 16 of Le Tour de France this week when it visits Carcassonne. Too bad it was not on Bastille Day when the town is painted in red.

Stage 15

Yes, but you don't saw in 2006?

You had a Stage Arrival of Tour de France, a show with the famous French TV presenter Michel Drucker AND the firework show at Cité!!

All the mid-town and downtown was prohibited all day long for cars! You needed the parking at the exterior of city!!

@[deleted] in 2006 I was not yet an avid cyclist, so I missed out on that visit. Although, 2006 was a rough year for cycling in general!

Yes, I remember of that because this year, they started to publish the routes of Tour de France on Dailymotion (only for the 1st one in 2006) and Youtube after

That's an out of the ordinary post, @[deleted] - I like it 🤗. Until now I mainly knew Carcassonne from the board game we play every now and then at home:

Although we've had some tense moments while playing, we never ended up with fiery red skies as in that picture of yours (thankfully)! 🎆

@Walter Buggenhout the first thing I thought about was the game too - I didn't even know Carcassone was a real place!

@[deleted] thanks for teaching me something today and sharing your beautiful corner of the world.

Great tour @[deleted] - I agree with @Walter Buggenhout about the game! I love that game and everything I know about Carcassonne was from that game. Now I know a whole bunch more because of you! Love it!
