Atlassian Community account connection

Urmo Luts March 10, 2022

Hi

Maybe some day Atlassian make little extra to connect old Accounts with new.

I have moved from one company to another and every time i create new account with new company e-mail and all community badges etc will connected with old account.

Maybe some day Atlassian is make thing that at least we can connect Community accounts together into one.

Or alternative e-mail address what does not change so simple and also Atlassian can understand that this person x is still same even if he/she use @malle.ee or @eesti.ee domain.

This can't be done.

An Atlassian account is either a personal or an owned account.

For a personal account, it's quite simple - you own it, you can put whatever email address on it you want to, and in theory, you could put your work email on it, changing it every time you moved.  You'd keep all your badges, activity in various systems, access to everything the account has been used for and so on.  (It would be up to each employer to "off-board" you by removing the account's access to their systems)

So, technically, you could have been just changing the email address.

The problem is with the owned accounts.  Organisations can take ownership of a domain, which means taking ownership of all accounts that belong to that domain, as per email address.

If any of your employers claimed a domain where your Atlassian account is registered, then that account becomes theirs.  Technically not a problem, but if you then move to another employer, you cannot take that account with you, it's not yours anymore.  This gives you two problems:

  • You couldn't change the email address to your new employer.
  • Even if you could, it's likely to be illegal for your new employer to gain access to the stuff you did with the account under the old one.

That second point makes it almost certainly illegal to merge any accounts that have been, or even might be, claimed by an organisation!

That said, it IS legal for them to move data associated with accounts in their systems.  So, if you had three accounts called Urmo@home, Urmo@Acme.corp and Urmo@Thingy.com, then, if you could demonstrate that your activity on Atlassian sites (developer and Community for example) with all three of those is from the same person, they could legally move Urmo@acme.corp and Urmo@Thingy.com badges, kudos and so-on over to Urmo@home

Your best option is a bit clunky I'm afraid.  It's to carry on what you've been doing but have one more personal Atlassian account.  Use the work accounts for work, and the personal one for non-work stuff

I've lost count of the Atlassian accounts I have.  I work for a consultancy where accounts are given to me by clients who want to retain ownership, and there are lots of clients.  I'm currently active with:

  • Nic@client1.com
  • Nic@client2.com
  • Nic's Adaptavist account (several clients have let that into their systems, but the account is owned by Adaptavist)
  • My personal account was created when Atlassian first created Atlassian accounts, which drew together all my activity on the older versions of the community, Atlassian sites and so on.  This is the one I'm posting with here now

I think that maybe there could be solution that there is backup e-mail where i can say that this urmo@acme.com is same urmo ho now is urmo@thingy.com.

Probably yes use own account for all Community thing will be best solution. All data under same account.

That can't work, because it would enable you to have access to systems that people might not want you to have.  An Atlassian account needs to have a single unique point of access, which Atlassian have chosen to be that single email address.
