It's Thursday!

I´ve never been to Italy (closes is probably being in Malta) but really want to go. So I, unfortunately, don't have any Italian memories :(  But I am counting on you ;) 

Sooooo, do you have an Italian memory you wanna share with us?

@Kristján Geir Mathiesen I have not been either, although I dream of a cycling holiday in Italy every year during the Giro D'Italia. Maybe we should plan a trip together?

I do have an Italian memory that sticks out though.

My father took a 2 month trip through Europe in 1966 after he finished college, and my parents went there for 2 weeks together in 1970 after they got married. Back in those days the way to preserve memories was having their photographs transferred to slides.

When we were kids my parents used to pull out the slide projector every once in a while and queue up those slides and entertain us or their friends with these memories. My father was a pretty decent amateur photographer and had the most amazing pictures of Pisa and Rome. Seeing the Leaning Tower projected onto a large screen in my living room and trying to fathom how a building could be suspended like that is a moment that lives in my memory to this day. That inspired me to look into engineering and architecture (before the internet!) and gain a deeper understanding and appreciation for the anomaly of the tower and that appreciation remains today, over 40 years later.

Does eating Lasagna having those straw bottom Chianti bottles with lit candles in them on the table count?  Maybe some Dean Martin going in the background?

I've only been to several Italian restaurants, but my wife's been there.  

I'm sure those bottles are the thing from the past.  Now you just get the regular glass bottle.

Who would have thought that so many varieties of cheese, tomatoes, wine, vinegar, pork, and olives would all have several varieties marked as PDO (Protected Designation of Origin) coming from Italy.

An Italian sweet memory I have is visiting the coastal town of Santa Savera on our recent trip to Italy.  We had one free day and thought we would see a beach town, I googled and found a few options.  Took a train to Santa Savera (50 minutes from Rome).  Beautiful place with a castle on the beach.  Enjoyed the mild sunny day relaxing on the beach.

 

Of course, on the same trip,we had booked a tour of Vatican City.  We asked the hotel to get us a taxi.  As we walked outside, a taxi came and the driver asked us if we were the ones going to Vatican City.  We said yes and got in.  Halfway through, the driver got a call and spoke to someone in Italian.  She then asked us something in Italian that none of us understood and I answered "NO".  She pulled the taxi to the side and asked us to get out and find another taxi to go.  What we later found out was that it was for another guest going to the Vatican City and we happened to be at that place at that time to get in.   We ended up hailing another taxi to go the rest of the way.

Italy is an area with lovely people in regional focus: food, drinks, history, heroes, coffee.....all of them. i like  them so much i can not stop talking about them..........from Santa Maria di Leuca till Lovere.....

Never got a chance to visit Italy but managed to get a view of the artificial Venice floating city during the Team'23 event in the Venitian Hotel. :)

@Kristján Geir Mathiesen ~ you're speaking my language!  As a nearly full-blooded Italian, I have a TON of Italian memories....just not any FROM Italy.  Never been but have a trip planned for next June so I'm sure I'll have many to share.

Despite having a great Christian tradition, one of the places near my home where I find peace from the hustle and bustle of the modern world is the anatomical theatre of the University of Padua where the first dissection in European history was performed. Here Vesalius got the inspiration to write his volume (de humani corporis fabrica libri septem aka 'On the fabric of the human body in seven books') which has been for about three centuries the textbook of anatomy comparable to the modern grey's manual of anatomy.

My dad's side of the family is in Napoli and we visited them in 2009 for my cousin's wedding. Had a great time and met many extended family that I haven't met before.

We also stopped by Capri which was right off the coast and it was awesome. Probably the cleanest beach I've ever been to.

Italy is such a beautiful country with even greater people. They are so lovely, open, and keep smiling all the time!

I was in Venice and Bergamo. Both places make me want to explore this country further. Time there goes slower, the weather is beautiful, and the food tastes like heaven.

I have been to Italy a couple of years ago. We flew to Italy's capital - Rome.

We visited a LOT of tourist attractions so one thing I remember is that we collected a lot of steps. Many tourist attractions are close together and can be reached on foot in one day. 

• Most impressive: St. Peter's Basilica
• Most beautiful: Roman Forum,  Colosseum, 
• Biggest disappoint: Trevi Fountain (it was so crowded... 😔)
• Most beautiful by night: Castel Sant'Angelo

I don't have any memories of Italy as I have never been. The closest memory I can come up with is visiting The Venetian casino in Las Vegas or eating at Olive Garden! HAHA! :)

My wife and I did a 5 day trip to Rome in 2019, it was amazing.

I also have fond memories of our senior year trip to Italy.

It's a beautiful country drenched in history and full of amazing culinary experiences.

I can highly recommend a visit!

My best memories are from my grandparents. We were all born in Brazil. My great-grandparents arrived here at the end of the 19th century. I loved to hear from their culture and learn a few words. My dream is to visit their origin cities: Mantua, Padua, and Verona.

Positive

I have both positive and negative memories about Italy.

The city trip to Rome in 2018 with my partner was awesome, I was really overwhelmed by the historical beauty. It's a must do.

Negative

On the other hand, when my parents and I were on vacation in Italy in I believe 1981, my uncle was participating/competing in the Formula K (FK) FIA Karting Championship in Parma.

It was a very hot summer and during re-fuelling in their custom-built touring car, a spark ignited a fire where my granddad - trying to save someone he thought was still in the bus - got burned severely.

The bus got burned down completely with all the karts, engines and tires in it.
