Throwback Thursday: plastic car building kits? #TBT

It's Thursday!

giphy

I just came across this picture of my sister, taken in the early 80´s. Don't tell her but she is not the main object of today's #TBT. Notice the plastic cars on the window sill behind her?

A Spiderman van on the left and silver/black Mustang on the right. Do you folks remember these from way back?

I would always get glue all over may fingers and the parts, leaving my fingerprint on them... They didn't look too pretty, to be honest.

Sooooo, got any memories from these days?
Let’s make it a great Thursday!

I don't remember having any "car" kits (cars have never really been my thing).  But, I do remember getting a Star Trek - The Original Series Enterprise building kit for Christmas one year that I LOVED putting together.

That could be why I still build and paint Warhammer models to this day.

My grandad used to work for Airfix, so every month or so he would get returned or damaged sets for cheap, so I had a constant flow of plastic planes with gluey fingerprints all over them!

Back in the day, this was my prized possession, the legendary Hotwheels Poison Pinto.
I treated it like a Ferrari… except it fit in my pocket! 😊

The only thing I had like this were balsa wood airplane kits. These fancy ones are now on Amazon, but the ones I had did not have any color on them.

They had slots and notches to fit them together, so there was no glue to make a mess.

Like you, I spent my summers assembling model cars.  Once I was old enough to cut grass, I was able to buy a few models.  This was in the 70s, so many of the models were inspired by George Barris.  After several models, you had a collection of spare parts and tried to cobble something together on your own.  If one turned out badly because of a molding, missing parts, or too much glue, we shoved firecrackers into it and blew it up.  I wish I still had some of them.

And like Rajat, I too had a Poison Pinto Hot Wheel.  I had many Johnny Lightning, Hot Wheels, and Matchbox cars during my childhood.  A few were my favorites.  I had a set that came with The Snake and The Mongoose dragsters.  I had the Red Baron Hot Wheel that I traded Kenny Coker a throat lozenge for, and I had the Poison Pinto.  Those were my favorites.  I'd trade any of them except those.

And yes, I had those balsa airplanes.  You know, I saw a startup where the company made those balsa planes but they had tiny servos that you controlled with a phone app.

Thanks for the memories.

I totally forgot about setting them on fire, @Jay Jarman or shoving firecrackers in them. I did that too :)

Takk @Barbara Szczesniak for reminding me of these wood airplanes. I think I had some made of styrofoam. Those were fun! I'm gonna buy some for my grandkids to play with :)

I enjoyed helping my brother build these kits but have never loved painting such tiny figures!

Never had car models, but in the late 2000s I did build a couple of Revell models, mostly ships similar to this airplane carrier.
It's quite an interesting thing to assemble, but as @Amanda Barber said, it's also a pain to paint them 🖌️😫
