Throwback Thursday: school trips? #TBT

It's Thursday!

giphy

When I was in 7th grade (Icelandic 7th grade, think we were 13 or 14 at that time) back in mid 1980's, we lobbied our teachers to allow us to go on a school trip to Vestmanneyjar (an island south of Iceland). This picture is taken during that trip. Looks like I am handing my friend Högni a rose. Couple of teachers came with us and supervised us. I think we had to raise money for the trip. We were allowed to sleep on the floor in the school, therefore the shelves and stacked tables. I think we spent 2 nights there. Been about 40 years ago...

Soooo, any memories from school trips you want to share with us?
Let’s make it a great Thursday!

I remember a school trip to Sweden in 12th grade (Germany). We were about 10 guys and lived one week in an old mansion on a hill next to the beach. That was awesome.

Oddly we had many school trips, but not too many were memorable.

The two that stand out are:

1. In 2nd grade (1985) the school took the entire grade to Fire Island. This included a ferry ride from the 'main land (Long Island)' to the barrier island, a hike through the Sunken Forest, and catching Horseshoe crabs by the shore. I think this one was memorable because my mother chaperoned.

2. In 5th (1988) grade our class went to the Brookhaven National Laboratory. I remember being amazed by all of the physics related exhibits in their Exploration Lab. It was the first time that science came to life for me.

Thanks for another trip down memory lane @Kristján Geir Mathiesen

I never went on any overnight trips in school, but, like @Andy Gladstone, I remember a couple of day trips:

  • In 2nd or 3rd grade, we went to a maple syrup farm (not sure farm is the right word). I don't remember anything about the processing part, but I remember walking through the trees with taps in them to extract the sap to process into syrup.
  • In 7th grade, we went to a large park with woodlands, ponds, wetlands, and glacially created landforms (yes, I just pulled that description straight from the Wikipedia page). This trip is memorable because my mom came as a chaperone, and one of my classmates bought a fishing lure/hook in the gift shop and managed to put it through his finger on the bus on the way back.

In junior high, our science class took a 2 day hike in NH which included a night on top of Mount Monadnock.

I don't think we had any overnight trips until high school. We went to Atlanta, Georgia, for a band competition. I remember visiting the park from a past Olympics, the Coca Cola museum, and a mall. Oh, and lots of shenanigans on the coach bus ride down there!

Another memorable trip was a short ride to a great hiking location with some members of my geology class in high school.

Hi

At school it wasn't very common to go on multi-day trips, just one full day, and I don't remember any special ones, because they used to be quite boring. I think my first trips, which I organized on my own with my friends, were when I started university.

Regards

Hi

My best school trip was in high school (around 1997). We went to Italy, almost all the west coste of Italy from Firenze to Napoli via Roma. It was incredible so full of History !

I had just begun to learn italian at high school so it was really great to speak in this language with native speakers. And of course a lot of fun and pranks with my classmates.

One of my most memorable school trips was to Khao Yai National Park in Thailand. We spent two days surrounded by nature, exploring waterfalls, hiking trails, and spotting wildlife. It is one that I will remember for a lifetime.
