Throwback Thursday: what extracurricular activities did you do at school? #TBT

It's Thursday!
giphy
In Iceland, we finish our compulsory education at age 16. I think it was sometime during the fall of my last year in school, so we were 15, that my friends and I were talking about this being our last year at this school. We had all seen 80’s movies with Prom dances and I think we had also been watching some older movies with bands. Anyway, we felt bad that our final dance, which isn’t called “Prom” or is anything glamorous like that, would not have alive band. So we talked to couple of our teachers and they agreed to coach/teach us how to play couple of songs and we formed a school band! Some of us already had instruments. I don’t think I did but purchased a used bass and amplifier. We’d practice after school at school and the teachers helped us. And then we performed at the last school dance. It was horrible! We were out of tune and rhythm and what naught. WE were horrible but hey, we did it :)

In middle school and high school, it was almost always sports of some sort - American football or track for the most part.

What a great story, @Kristján Geir Mathiesen -- and you get lots of brownie points for trying!

I was also in a band, we weren't great but we had a lot of fun. I also played soccer and tennis, held some class offices, and worked my junior and senior years. Ah, to have that much energy again....

Most of the time it was basketball and tennis. During the latest years of high school, I was building out electronics kits and personal hardware projects. Also, was working part time jobs saving up for a car and college.

I played clarinet in band in high school which was probably only extra-curricular when we had marching band practice in the summers. I also had a part-time job and hung out with friends. :-D

Love your story - do you still play your bass at all?

I played flute for a few years at the start of secondary school, then I grew up a bit and discovered girls and after that there was never enough time to practice the flute!

All-around nerd, apparently - band, math league, knowledge bowl. Lots of homework? That should count as an extracurricular.

@Kristján Geir Mathiesen the only time I thought about a drum set was when my godson's mum was being more annoying than usual.  Since this was right before my godson's birthday, I bought him a drum set!

Love this! Even if the band was a mess, the fact that you made it happen is what really counts! Totally 80s movie vibes! 🎸👏

Hi

Mamma mia, I did a bit of everything, a bit of sports almost every day, then I taught math to the little ones and volunteered at a children's hospital one afternoon a week, caring for children undergoing long-term treatments who spent months hospitalized.

It really was a pretty active childhood.

Regards

@Susan Waldrip no I don't speak to my godson's mum anymore, but not because of the drum kit; she moved as far into deepest darkest Wales as she could to recapture her childhood holiday memories, and I don't think she's ever left there

I played softball and basketball and went to a lot of Math League meets. I also did a lot of babysitting—back in the days when I made a whole $1 per hour! 💰

Thanks for the memories again, @Kristján Geir Mathiesen

Your story reminds me of my own passed hobbies. I always participated in the school theater groups and that's where I grew a love for public speaking. Any time I see a live performance like the one you mentioned it does not matter if it's good or bad it always takes me back to that time.

For me, it was mostly sports—primarily basketball, though I occasionally played football as well. Since I represented the basketball team, that sport was played more seriously, with proper rules and as a coordinated team.

Football, on the other hand, was complete mayhem—about 40 students running after the ball with barely any rules. We would just kick the ball in whichever direction it was going. The goal was simply to get a couple of touches on the ball!

I know I'm a week behind on this one.

To be honest I didn't actually take part in school extracurricular activities.  But, outside of school I played recreational baseball for the local community team for about 10 years in the summer.

In the winter, there was (and still is) a community programs guide that gets distributed and my parents "encouraged" me to always select something to be involved in.

I did a wide range of things from:

  • Drawing classes
  • Karate
  • Floor hockey
  • Woodworking
