Welcome Wednesday: Time to flex your green thumb!

Happy Wednesday Everyone!

Last year, my wife and I sold our house and moved closer to both of our families. Because we moved at the beginning of July we didn’t plant anything at our old house. And, because we arrived in July we didn’t have the opportunity to choose what we planted in our absolutely amazing garden at our new house. We have both vowed that this year will be different and we have a number of plans for the garden this year.

My question for you this week: “Do you enjoying gardening? And if so, what are you planting this year?“

Personally, and I know I have said this in the past somewhere on the forums, I don’t plant flowers, I only plant things I intend to eat. We have been given a couple of things from my in-laws farm, including some raspberry canes & some Rhubarb stocks.

In addition, we have purchased a small blueberry bush and I have started growing some jalapeños. If I actually get some peppers, I’m planning to try my hand at making my own hot sauce.

I’d love to hear from you in the comments below.

Have a great rest of the week everyone!

Good luck.  I tried planting rhubarb in my garden in Norfolk (very close to the sea) and it just hasn't come to anything.  I have a longenberry bush, however, that for the first two years looked like it was dead but on Year 3 it suddenly became abundant with delicious berries.  So my advice would be to not necesarily expect everything to work in the first year.

That is such a true statement @Deborah Beale!  In our old place I had given up on the "dead" Rosemary I had planted in it came to life in year two!

In theory I love the idea of gardening.

In practice I don't do it at all.

Why?

Because, if you know me, you know how symmetrical of a thinker I am. And gardens need some chaos to bring out their beauty. My wife is much more suited to the task - and all of our neighbors always comment on how pretty the garden looks!

I plan to add a butterfly bush to our garden beds this year. We were also gifted a raised garden bed, so I'll probably do some salsa gardening this year for something easy! When we first bought our home, we had a 20x30-foot garden left by the previous owners. We tried our hand at that for a few years, but the soil was never great no matter what we did. We opted to grass over the area and do container gardening to have better control over the soil.

Gardening is therapeutic for me after spending hours at the keyboard day in and day out. Whether I can eat it or just admire the beauty, I love digging in the dirt!

We do have rabbits and deer who enjoy eating whatever I plant so I still buy fresh produce at the local Farmers' Market.

I love gardening but, unfortunately, I live in an upstairs apartment with no yard.  So, I put my plants in pots that I move in and out of the house each season.  I would love to get a temporary tract that would allow me to grow some vegetables and fruit for the summer but for now I've got to settle for a thornless blackberry bush I have in a pot.

Nice. We planted an orange tree many years ago and we only got one orange from it. I got to say it's one of the best orange we had. I haven't gotten around to investigate and see how to grow more oranges. However, the tree, branches, and leaves seem to be doing good.

Planning to plant a few more trees to shade our yard a bit.

I definitely enjoy gardening but haven't done very much of it for the last several years. Will probably stick with some flowers this year and maybe a few herbs and see how the Montana summer does for it.

This is our garden, although you can see the stoney weed filled area outside the window where we'll repot anything that grows in the yellow pot!

Looks like we're going to be doing some repotting soon...
