#5 Report of the Week: Version Releases

In the fast-paced world of project management and software development, keeping track of version releases and the status of issues at each release point is crucial. This week’s report on version releases helps to gain a clear understanding of version release timelines and issue resolution progress. Here’s a breakdown of what the report offers and how it can be used to improve project tracking and efficiency.

At the heart of the report is a timeline chart, which provides a month-by-month view of Fix Version releases. Each version release is marked by a vertical orange line, allowing teams to quickly spot when new versions were rolled out. A critical component of the report is the breakdown of issue statuses (open or resolved) at the time of each version release. This breakdown provides a snapshot of the version’s overall health at the moment of release.

Filtering options

1. Time Range – using the Time page filter, users can select from various timeframes, including All Times, Previous Year, Last 12 Months, Current Year.

2. Filtering by Project – filter data by specific projects or view all projects at once. The default setting is "All Projects," but it can easily be adjusted to drill down into individual project details.

Understanding the Data: Issues in the Release

A unique aspect of this report is how it counts resolved issues. The report considers issues that were both resolved and released with a specific version, regardless of when the actual resolution occurred. This gives an accurate snapshot of the version's state at its release date.

This feature helps teams avoid confusion when analyzing historical data, as it provides a clear view of which issues were finalized and part of the specific release, even if some resolutions occurred earlier.

Why This Report is Valuable for Teams

The "Version Releases" report offers multiple benefits for project managers and teams:

  • Visualize the release timeline: By marking each version release on a timeline, teams can easily track their release cadence and identify patterns in their release cycles.

  • Balance of resolved vs. open issues: The clear distinction between resolved and open issues helps teams understand their issue resolution progress at the time of each release.

  • Monitor progress over time: With customizable time and project filters, teams can track their issue management and release performance over different periods and across various projects.

  • Optimize release planning: Understanding the status of issues at each release allows project managers to make informed decisions about upcoming releases and prioritize issue resolution effectively.
