We have mainly Software projects in use, a variety of legacy and new cloud projects. They all can use a custom field (dropdown).
I can't add it to my screen in a Business project.... And can't move my workflow and screens into the Software Project Type.
What are my options, besides "start a new software project and make everything over again" - I started down that road, but I cannot import the business workflow, or the screen I was working with so far.
So frustrating. It's like Atlassian smashed two totally incompatible products together, and glossed over the wallpaper to make them look, but not operate, the same.
We can use global custom fields to all projects in the Jira site but not for Team Managed projects.
Please check the whether your project is Team managed or company managed project by following below link which helps you:
Incase your project is Team Managed project then you need to migrate the project to new company managed project by bulk move. Please follow below link for the same:
I had started this as a Team-Managed project. In my case, it was simplest to make a new (somewhat duplicate) Custom Field, and list only the newest relevant (and duplicate) entries).
Thanks for the clarifications and the link, it will come in handy for others, and gives me some future considerations if I need to migrate.

It sounds like you might be using a team-managed project instead of a company-managed one. If you go into the project it should say what type it is if you look on the left-hand side if you are still using the old UI. In the new UI you have to go to View all projects in order to see what type the project is.
Team-managed projects do not have access to custom fields created for company-managed projects. You should view team-managed projects as its own island with no access to anything outside of it.
