Pre-receive hook failed to execute properly

I configured my repository with a pre hook Require commits to be associated with a JIRA issue.  I provided JQL clause and regex key. When I commit and push, a message pops up saying "A pre-receive hook failed to execute properly - contact an Administrator" appears.

What would be the possible reason for this? Could anyone help me fix this error?

If you're on Bitbucket Server I recommend installing the free Control Freak plugin and letting it handle this problem.  

(Full disclosure: my company created and maintains Control Freak).

If you're on Bitbucket Cloud it's probably best to just use Atlassian's built-in control for this (the "Require issue keys in commit messages" option).  More documentation here.
