The editor in Confluence 3.5.5 is just awful!
I format the text properly and then when I do a SAVE, the editor merges most of the sentences together!
I've tried "shift and enter" on those lines, but still will not execute a simple carriage return!
Can someone tell me how to use this editor?
This answer did not help.
I was using Rich Text Editor and when I looked at Wiki Markup, the \\ was already there. My work around is to not use any bullets and/or numbering when adding text to a Confluence page.
As I said, the Rich Text Editor in 3.5 and below was notorious for getting \\ inserted too frequently, infrequently or in the wrong place.
Everywhere I've been that uses Confluence with the old pair of editors, the advice was "use whichever editor you prefer, but if you use Rich Text, get the content right and then swap to wiki markup to clean up the mess it makes of the formatting"
The other work-around is to swap to the wiki editor when the RTE has failed. The wiki markup works. It might not be nice for a lot of users, but you do get exactly what you type, unlike the RTE.
I'd also seriously consider upgrading. 3.5 is out of support soon, and the new editor in 4 and 5 is vastly better. (I'd still like to be able to directly edit what I typed, rather than what Confluence translated it into, but that's the only gripe)

Are you using the rich text editor or wiki markup?
For wiki markup, just add \\ where you want to force a line break. The rich text editor is supposed to do this in the background, but it was never great at getting it right. Could you try wiki markup if you're not using it already?
