Does "Relates To" issues link keep related stories from closing?

Joe Ferrer February 28, 2018

Hi dear friends. I was going to use the issues link "Related to" for simply letting my peers know certain user stories had similarities or associations.  They were in no way dependent on each other, nor did I want to cause any of the "Related" stories from closing if they were done.   So question:  Does "Relating To" keep the related story open?  If I "Relate To" another story, am I causing a problem for the other story maybe staying open until mine is closed?  I was thinking "Related to" was strickly informational, not binding. Any information would be appreciated. Thanks so much.

Hi Joe, yes, it is only the information. You can create your own issue link types so you can describe the 'type' of relationship more precisely.

Martin, thank you kindly. Appreciate it.

Martin, if you know this answer, would appreciate it as well.  Do I need special Admin rights to create a new type of issue link, does my Jira Admin need to set that up or does any user that can edit a story have that capability?  Thanks again.

Yes, user must have JIRA Administrators global permission to create new issue links type and Link issues permission to link issues. You can check documentation here for details:

You're welcome Joe, can you accept the answer if it answers your question? Thank you

Yes gladly. I would definitely be glad to, but there is no icon or acceptance button on my screen. Would a screen shot showing this help?  I'm using a current firefox browser on  Windows10. Let me know.  Thanks again.

Look to the left of the answer you want to accept - you should have "Dark grey tick on a light grey circle" / "Votes" / "Poster's avatar" / "Poster's name" / "day of posting" on the first line.  Hit the tick, it should go green to say "accepted"
