User Management in JIRA (for confluence) without using Crowd

Katie Minks June 11, 2018

I am looking to do all of my user management in JIRA and have confluence accept credentials directly from JIRA.    My success criteria are as follows:

1. when a user goes from JIRA to Confluence they do not see a log in page.

2. I do not have to use the anonymous user function as all users need to be authenticated by the JIRA User Directory.

3. External users cannot see content from confluence if they are not listed in the JIRA user directory.

The documentation only outlines a way to do this using crowd, but it seems like we should be able to achieve this result without the use of crowd.

Thank you in advance for your help.

HI @Katie Minks

Welcome to the community!

1. when a user goes from JIRA to Confluence they do not see a log in page.

For this, you can use SSO in Jira.

2. I do not have to use the anonymous user function as all users need to be authenticated by the JIRA User Directory.

You need to work with Jira user server.

3. External users cannot see content from confluence if they are not listed in the JIRA user directory.

You can apply the restriction to avoid this from an external user.

Hello,

You should create a Jira user directory and connect it to Confluence. Also you should set up an Application Link between Jira and Confluence. You can find an explanation here:

I saw this documentation, but it appears to be out of date as there is not a Jira User Server option available under user management.Jira1.PNG

Is there a different way to get to the Jira User Server?  The above image is all I got when I went to user management as directed in the documentation.  I also tried searching for it using the . search function and was not able to find it.

I think you do not have rights of System Admin. Have a look in the global permission scheme. I have it in Jira 7.9

I think I do have administrator permissions:

I looked in global permissions and I am not seeing anything about the Jira User Server:

I am on version 7.8.0, so I'm not sure if this functionality would have moved since then.

@Katie Minks you are not a System Jira administrator. There must be a System Jira administrator before Jira Administrator permission in the Global permissions. You can find the whole list of global permissions here:

I did get system admin access for Jira and I was able to successfully.  Now I am working on getting confluence to get the directory from Jira.  I don't think I should have to go through Crowd to be able to use the Jira user directory to authenticate in confluence.  When I am trying to set up the server I get the following error:

No, you do not need Crowd. Kindly make sure that Confluence can see your Jira server.

The Jira server can ssh to the Confluence server.  I can also ssh from the Confluence server to the Jira Server.
