Set up restricted spaces for clients / setting default group for new users

Brian Catanzaro April 14, 2018

I want to invite new users, and by default put them into a client space where they can only access their own spaces.  For example:

  • Group Corporate / Access all spaces
  • Group / Client A / Access only Space A
  • Group / Client B / Access only Space B

It seems that inviting new users puts them into the (Confluence-Users) group automatically, which gives them access to all spaces by default.

Can this be solved by:

  1. All new users go into a Restricted Group which cannot view anything.  Then later put them into their Client Group?
  2. When you invite a user you can specify their Group?
  3. Something even more convenient?

Brian,

The confluence-users group is likely your default group for Confluence access, so the moment you add someone to have Confluence access, they'll be in that group.

You'll want to follow a procedure similar to the one here: How to grant access to one space only to a user in Confluence Note that the instructions there are for Cloud so if you're on Server then you'll need to follow the steps in Groups and Global Permissions rather than Application Access.

Essentially:

  1. Create the user.
  2. Remove the user from confluence-users
  3. Create a special group for these users, make sure it has Can use permissions for Confluence.
  4. Add the new user to that group.
  5. Ensure the new group is not in Default Space Permissions.

Keep in mind that each user creates their own personal space, so once they've done that you may need to go in and double-check that they have access to their own space.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Shannon
