We are looking to implement JSD for use in our Tech Support Department. We would like to set up a portal for clients to create tickets. However, we would also like to be able to allow clients to access the system to check the status of their ticket.
I've been looking, but haven't found anything that specifically states that can be done thru JSD (client portal). So I'm hoping that someone here can tell me if that can be done or suggest how it might be done.

Absolutely. The workflow status of a ticket will be displayed in the portal for the client. You can also customize the workflow status description when setting up the request types.

Hello,
On the client portal there is a Requests page, where clients can see their tickets, with current status and some other info. If that is not enough, there are apps that can show a lot of information for the tickets on the portal.
