our IT department is split into 3 teams which are working on very different tasks.
At the moment I already created a few request types. But is there a way to assign (or tag, or equip with a component, or a tag, whatever) tickets based on the request type?
I don't want to create a project for every team. This makes the portal very overloaded I think.
Maybe someone knows a better solution for this...

You can do this with components.
If some of the request types are to go to a specific team you can use the 'Hidden Fields with preset value'
If the request types could go to any team you'll want the user to fill out the component for you. You can change the name of the Component field to say something "What does this relate to?" and give them certain choices.
